Programmes

Each Cherish program exists to teach either leadership skills, problem-solving skills or life skills, or to offer counseling and mentoring. The development of leaders of integrity is vital to facilitate for community transformation. Young leaders are trained and raised up through both mentoring relationships and peer support and training.

There are a variety of ways to get involved, either as a Cherish participant, facilitator, or providing external support. We really value partnership!

Cherish Study
The Cherish study is an eight session discussion group. The goal of the study is to inspire and equip young women to live a pure life. For fear of judgment, many young women are reluctant to discuss personal matters such as dating, relationships and sex in a Christian setting. Cherish provides a forum for open, non-judgmental discussion, while providing a Biblical perspective on the issues young women face.

The study lays a foundation of worth and identity based on the premise that we are all created by a loving God. From this foundation of worth, participants are encouraged to consider how they make decisions (especially in relationships). Where they feel they have made regretful choices, participants are reminded of the love of God and taught how to receive forgiveness and healing from Him. The material also allows for discussion about the practicalities of living a pure life.

Peer support, leadership development and team-building all occur within the context of the safe small group discussions and activities of a Cherish study.

We’d love to hear from you if you are interested in getting involved with a Cherish Study, either to facilitate a group or to participate in one.

Leadership Training
Within every Cherish program there are opportunities for young leaders to develop their skills. The Leadership Training Program is comprised of short modules addressing a variety of leadership issues. The local Cherish facilitator is able to use the modules appropriate for the young women in her sphere. Modules include:

  • Communication skills
  • Handling conflict
  • Authority
  • Vision
  • Building character
  • Team building

Peer Support
Rather than fostering dependence upon external ‘leaders’, the Peer Support Program is designed to assist young women in supporting each other. This support is encouraged upon a foundation of friendship and proven character, not control or manipulation. The goal is that young women will find strength in being part of a network with others who are either younger/less mature or older/more mature than they themselves. The development of leadership and mentoring skills will be a natural byproduct of healthy peer support networks.

If you’d like to join a Cherish peer support network in your area, please contact us and we’ll put you in touch with someone in your area.

Community Action
At the heart of Cherish is a desire to see whole communities transformed. As young women begin to discover their worth and skills they are encouraged to use these to uplift and empower those around them. The community action program provides a framework to assist participants in practically serving their local community, while at the same time developing leadership skills. The possibilities of service are as endless as the imaginations of young people, but activities might include:

  • Helping at a crèche
  • Cleaning and caring for the local park
  • Starting a Saturday morning club for younger children
  • Starting a homework club in the school to assist other learners
  • Baking treats for sick people

Cherish Clubs
Cherish clubs operate in local communities to bring young women together for friendship and support. The goal of Cherish Clubs is to mentor young women in a fun, safe environment.

Emerging leaders are encouraged to develop their leadership skills as they assist the club facilitator. Ultimately Cherish Clubs may be run by the young people, with an external leader offering support and training at a distance.
